EIGHTEEN

1973 - I can do it on my own - Independent
Friends/Family:
HS friends, Terry, Bill, Mom and Dad

I graduated in 1973. We had a 10-0 Football team. I ended my 5-year streak as a cheerleader and my 4-year streak as Class Secretary. Pretty much flunked Trig and got a D in Chemistry but aced all my other classes including Modern Poetry and Literature. What can I say, I was not a mathematician, although, I really liked Geometry. I had a great time in high school. It was a social club for me. We group dated for the most part. I was on again off again with Terry but could not commit. When I wanted to get back with him as a senior (at the Homecoming Dance) I found out that Debbie, who was dating him at the time, was pregnant. HELLO!! Guess that squashed that plan. I was upset. How dare she.! ;o) And for the record...Terry and I never did that.

Learning my lesson from the year before, a bunch of girls decided to go to the Michael Jackson concert in Dayton instead of prom. We would go there then drive back and go to all the after prom parties. It ended up being so much fun. No drama. Just fun. And seeing Michael Jackson was great. We had good seats so we could pretty much see everything.

In July of that year, I joined the Army. Yes, I did. I did not want to go to a state school. I wanted to go to art school so I drove to the Pittsburgh Art Institute by myself. I stayed the weekend and toured the school. I really liked it but I could not figure out how I was going to pay for it. I came from a middle class family that did not make enough to pay for my school but made too much for grants. So, I was talking to a friend at school and she told me about a program in the Army. I could go in as a specialist and get my job choice which was an illustrator. I illustrated handbooks for military personnel out in the field. They contained maps, emergency evacuation routes, aerial photography, uniforms, ranks, insignias and so on. It was a fantastic job. At 18 I was making great money, had the best equipment, and worked with great people. I was stationed at Ft Bragg, NC. I lived off base with my friend Pam and we went to Myrtle Beach or Wright Beach all the time. I also spent a lot of time in DC. It was only a few hours away. I still love the East Coast to this day. Much better than West.

I met my first love in the military. He was a Captain and I was a Specialist 4th Class. I wasn't suppose to fraternize but...whatever. His name was Bill. I dated him for about 3 years. We had a great time. He was 4 years older than me. At the time that seemed like a huge gap in age. But we continued to date and he taught me how to play tennis. He also took me to the officer's club and all of our friends were married officers. They were all much older than me and I remember their wives being jealous of me. A few were kind to me but most were very snobbish. I could not help it I was cute.
